Thanksgiving and Christmas, two of the biggest times of the year that so many of us get together with family, friends and loved ones. It was at that time in 2017 that I felt a nudge, a calling from God, to do something special for those less fortunate who were alone for the holidays.

Speaking of those less fortunate, it's not always been those with two feet that need our help. I learned quickly when I relocated to Charlotte in 2006, that there was a huge need here to help and care for the homeless animals. I began working with organizations in the Charlotte area to help and care for them, and to be what's called "the voice of the animals." This calling from God to help the homeless people of Uptown Charlotte seemed to be the next step, aka the next chapter. We become better people when we help others and put their needs ahead of our own and become more aware, more motivated, and more loving towards people. We become "the light." Matthew 5:16 says, In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

I carried out the very first mission alone in 2017, and while doing so I came across a structure in Uptown which said, 'Be compassionate for the weak. The strong don’t need your help but you might someday ask for theirs.' These words have stuck in my heart and have contributed to what God has planned for me, my team, and the Hearts to Hands CLT organization.

Proverbs 19:17 says: 'Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and He will reward them for what they have done.' Together with our hearts and hands, we will act out on one of God’s callings to those hands and hearts in need here locally.

Growing up in rural Pennsylvania we were encouraged to finish everything on our dinner plate. When we didn’t, sometimes there would be a speech about “starving children in Africa.” I was a typical spoiled American teenager. My only real understanding of missions work came from slideshows presented by missionaries our church supported.

At age 15, I accompanied my church youth group on a missions trip to Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The long-lasting effects of what happened in that small corner of the universe still impact my life to this day. Spending time with the Haitians felt like a gift, every interaction filled with love and kindness. Those who had so little opened up their hearts and homes to us, often foregoing their best meal to ensure we were cared for. They offered endless smiles despite the hardships and unsanitary, impoverish conditions they faced.

The experience in Haiti as a young teen opened my mind and softened my heart for missions work as an young adult. Since 2006, I have been engaged with a village in El Zapote, Guatemala helping to support the needs of underprivileged children. But I always wanted to do more to help the less fortunate closer to home. So when circumstances prevented me from spending the 2018 Thanksgiving holiday with my family in PA, I jumped at the opportunity to join Mike in doing something special to bless the homeless in Charlotte.

I look forward to all of the lives that Hearts to Hands CLT will touch, because anyone can change the world... one day at a time… one mission at a time.
